Abu Rayhan Al Biruni and the pilgrimage of Arbaeen
Biruni is regarded as one of the greatest scholars of the
medieval Islamic era about a thousand years ago.
As an Iranian polymath scholar, he was well versed in
physics, mathematics, astronomy, natural sciences and history.
He is known as the "unbiased writer" among the
other countries scholars.
“The Remaining Signs of Past Centuries” is one of his early
publications. This book is a comparative study of calendars of different
cultures and civilizations.
Also, this book includes mathematical, astronomical, and
historical information followed by exploring the customs and religions of
different cultures.
In this book, Biruni says:
"On the 20th day of the month of Safar, the head of
Hussein (AS) returned to where his body and was buried and buried there as
well.
The pilgrimage of Arbaeen originated from that day.
This was done by 40 people of Hussein family who visited and
prayed Hussein’s grave on their way while returning from Sham in current
Syria”. Biruni explicitly referred to the "Arbaeen pilgrimage" in
this book, which indicates the thousand years of history of the Arbaeen
anniversary.
While, in public opinion, it was started by Iranians after
falling of Saddam regime.
